Fascia is a system of soft connective tissue surrounding every muscle, tendons, ligaments and organs through the body. Visually fascia is clear/white layers containing bundles of collagen fibers that are oriented in a wavy pattern parallel to the direction of pull. It is very flexible and can withstand great unidirectional forces until these wavy fibres are straightened out. Injuries, repetitive stress, dehydration can affect fascial health and over time can become stuck or adhere so that they are no longer flexible which in turn can create tension into other areas and cause dysfunction. If you have had a scar you may have felt the pull on surrounding areas and then overwork of another area to compensate. Fascia acts as a passageway for nerves, blood vessels and lymph so any tension in fascial system can affect them. Myofascial release techniques can be helpful in releasing restrictions within the fascia.
